Today's adventure on the Appalachian Trail brings us to Day 138, a day filled with unexpected twists and natural delights.
The Trail's Surprises
I began the day with a leisurely start, a welcome change from the usual early morning hikes. Little did I know, the trail had a few surprises in store. The climb up Bemis Mountain was a rocky, muddy affair, offering no views as a reward. But, as they say, it's the journey, not the destination, and this journey led me to a delightful discovery.
Peak Blueberry Picking
After the climb, I descended to the Bemis Mountain Lean-to, a welcome spot to dry out my tent and clothes, which had suffered from the previous day's rain. As I packed up, the sun made a brief appearance, and I seized the opportunity. Sliding off the trail, I set up camp on some exposed rock faces, a perfect spot to dry my gear and enjoy a little wild blueberry picking. The blueberries were abundant and near peak ripeness, a true trail treat.
A Productive Pause
Spending an hour in this idyllic spot not only dried my tent but also provided a much-needed break. It's amazing how a simple pause can rejuvenate the spirit and energize the body. With my gear dry and my belly full of wild blueberries, I continued on, ready to tackle the rest of the day's challenges.
Ponds and Progress
The trail then led me through a sharp descent to a water source, a much-needed stop to replenish my supplies. After a quick refill, I tackled the steepest climb of the day, rewarded with a bench overlooking a distant pond. Here, I took a break, snacked, and caught up on some blog work. The trail then became cruisier, and I made better time, skirting the edges of several ponds before reaching my campsite on Little Swift River Pond.
Muddy Adventures
The path to the campsite was a muddy adventure, with rotted bog boards adding an extra challenge. But, as any experienced hiker knows, it's these little obstacles that make the journey memorable. At the campsite, I reunited with fellow hikers Birdie and Shooter, and we set up camp for the night. A quick trip to the froggy pond provided some cleanish-looking water for filtering, and a simple dinner rounded off the day.
Day 138 Recap
In terms of stats, Day 138 saw me cover 15.5 miles with a significant ascent and descent. It was a day of surprises, from unexpected rain to moose poop encounters, and delightful discoveries, like the peak blueberry picking. These are the moments that make hiking the Appalachian Trail an adventure like no other.
A Deeper Reflection
What makes these trail experiences so fascinating is the constant interplay between the expected and the unexpected. The trail teaches us to embrace the unknown, to find joy in the simple pleasures, and to navigate the challenges with resilience. It's a journey of self-discovery, where every step brings a new lesson and every day offers a unique perspective. So, as I continue my NOBO thru-hike, I look forward to more of these trail tales, each one a chapter in my personal growth story.
